Hello EVE players,

I'm a new player and so far i am loving this game. I got myself 3 months game time to let myself go and i am really looking forward to it! So far, i enjoy mining most. It's nice and calm. Later on i will engage in combat ;)

A friend of mine donated me a retriever, which i am working towards now on skill basis.
However, i have a few questions i would like to ask about a certain fit.

It is my understanding that the lower the security level, the better ore you will find generally speaking.
So, right here i have this link to the retriever, and it shows a couple of fits.
http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Retriever

When looking at the information below, it mentions 0.5 sec.
With the right tanking fit, can this ship do 0.5 sec mining?
I am aware of two threats, being the "reds" (npc's) and players that might gank me with a low costly ship in order to have benefit.

Is there a formula that indicates if it is safe to go into 0.5 sec with a specific ship, that takes Tank fits, Ship cost, enemy DPS and enemy profit into one equation? Simply put, when am i good to go, and when will i become a target?
Nobody will gank me if they know they will fail or know they will sacrifice more then what they earn.

Or would a Covetor do better in 0.5 sec? Any information is more then welcome. Thank you in advance.

1. Use something like the following if you want to mine @0.5 or 0.6 without worrying much about ganking. You can easily fit it with low skills. Upgrade modules to T2 as you gain them.

[Procurer, Highsec]

Mining Laser Upgrade I
Damage Control II

Limited 'Anointed' EM Ward Field
Limited Kinetic Deflection Field I
Limited Thermic Dissipation Field I
Limited Adaptive Invulnerability Field I

Strip Miner I

Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I
Medium Core Defense Field Extender I

Hobgoblin I x5

2. Use this to calculate which ore you should mine. Right now, going for Kernite or Scordite would be your best option.

3. Never run a covetor solo. Actually, with the current meta never run a covetor in Highsec.

Thanks! that's exactly what i was looking for.
One thin tho, u mention scordite. Which is what i find in 0.9 as well. Would it be recommended to stay in 0.9 to be extra safe and increase mining yield?

You can do that, but you will find more contestants in the belts going for the exact same thing.

Thank you.
One more question, if i may.

How does the ganking actually work. Do the people who gank me get the total ship's value including the equipment i fit?
Or do they get a certain percentage, if so is it based on RNG?

Reason i ask, is because i want to calculate what would be the highest price i can equip my ship with, in order to not be interresting to those who gank :)

Thanks for all the advice.
I have been doing a lot of reading up the last two days, trying to figure out exactly what it is i need and how the game works.
So far, i have found lots of information but it is all old information and thus most likely not even valid anymore.
The game updates might have changed a lot.

What i have made out, is that most people recommend a Covetor over a retriever when you need tank. But i don't understand how that works.
I am using EFT V2.22.1 and with it i made some builds:

*Using [All level V] with just Mining Laser Upgrade II and Strip Miner I to all slots on all ships.
*All resistances are equal on all ships.

Retriever:

-Effective HP: 9614
-Shield cap: 2875
-Armor: 2125
-Structure: 2500
-Defence: 9
-Yield: 1093

Now compare that to a Covetor:

-Effective HP: 7213
-Shield cap: 2125
-Armor: 1625
-Structure: 1875
-Defence: 10
-Yield: 1203

Am i wrong to understand that the Covetor is likely to be destroyed far before the Retriever will be?
Or does that Defence rating upped by 1 do that much more?
One more thing, here is the Procurer which kind of took my interest:

Procurer:

-Effective HP: 29065
-Shield cap: 9375
-Armor: 6250
-Structure: 6875
-Defence: 17
-Yield: 1002

Why take risk being ganked in a retriever/covetor, when i don't see a Procurer being ganked that easily, just for ~200 yield.

proved and survivable Retriever fit I've used.. survived number of T2 cataGankers attempt.

High: 2 X Strip miner II (T2 crystals)
med: Adaptive Invulnerability Field
Lows: 2 X Mining Laser Upgrade \ 1 X Damage Control
rigs: 1 Shield extender \ 1 thermal resist \ 1 CPU rig
Drones: 5 X Hobgoblin I

tight on Cap but run Damage control all times and activate Adaptive field when hostiles are on overview. Stay aligned and warp out as soon as gankers enters overview. Use T2\Meta 4 as possible, Don't leave drones out only send them to space when rats shows up and take them back into drone bay when rats are dead.

It doesn't. The Covetor can be destroyed by a solo destroyer.

To elaborate the biggest miner ganking group is the New Order.
http://www.minerbumping.com/p/the-code.html
They don't gank people who follow those rules (needs a permit @ 10 mill/year and a pledge of loyalty in your bio). Going afk is still a big nono however.
I made a alt to test this and went mining (which i loathe). i bought a permit , joined their channel and found friendly helpful people. They ganked the multiboxers stealing all my ice for me and gave me contacts for orca boosts in my area. Then i stopped mining again.
I say this in many contexts in eve.
The MOST important thing is to join some communities in eve.
Corps are def one (and decent high sec corps are rare).
people like the new order or belligerent undesirables are others.
SOMER and other gambling sites have a nice community.
There are lots of special interest groups with chat channels too.
Join 2-4 that interest you and a decent corp and your eve experience will grow.

PS If combat interests you then stop mining and train for it now. Mining is not an ideal way to start an eve career and is very low income compared to most alternatives.
