Transfer news live - Man Utd issue Branthwaite threat, Arsenal star wants exit (2024)

The 2024 summer transfer window is less than two days old - but it's already kicking into gear.

Manchester United have lodged their first bid to buy top target Jarrad Branthwaite, although their offer of just £35million up front has been scoffed at by Everton. After agreeing personal terms with the 21-year-old defender, United hope to capitalise on Everton's well-documented financial woes, but a move from rivals Arsenal could dramatically change the landscape and put the Toffees in a much stronger bargaining position.

That's because Arsenal have made contact to sign Branthwaite's team-mate, Amadou Onana, with the Gunners told to pay at least £50m. Should that deal be completed by June 30, that'd likely be enough for Everton to avoid any further sanctions from the Premier League and hold out even longer to try and keep hold of Branthwaite.

It's less straightforward for Crystal Palace, however, as star man Michael Olise has a release clause worth around £60million. Mirror Football understands that Chelsea have already made contact with Palace but aren't eligible to trigger that clause directly because they didn't qualify for the Champions League.

Trippier reflects on failed Man Utd move

Kieran Trippier has detailed the circ*mstances behind his failed move to Manchester United, revealing that previous interest from the Red Devils "just fell away".

The England international, 33, was heavily linked with United towards the end of his two-and-a-half year spell with Atletico Madrid back in the summer of 2021. Ultimately, though, a switch failed to materialise and Trippier remained in Spain for a further six months before Newcastle came calling in the January transfer window, signing the right-back in a £12million deal.

And speaking on The Overlap, via Sky Bet, he revealed all about the interest from United. He said: “When I was in Madrid, the season before I left it was a tough year for me for numerous reasons. I just wanted to come back to England, my family was finding it difficult at the time. I could have stayed at Atletico Madrid, I could have signed a new 3-year contract.

“Simeone in the car park on the day I was leaving didn’t want me to go but it was the right thing at the right time for my family. As players you have to be realistic of where you can go. I knew I wasn’t going to sign for Manchester City or Liverpool, I knew I was restricted to certain clubs. [Manchester] United did come [in for me] straight after the Euros and that was very close. I grew up with my family being reds, but it didn’t happen. Everything happens for a reason.”

Yoro boost

Manchester United have been handed a boost if they move for Lenny Yoro.

The Lille star features on the Red Devils’ defensive shortlist. According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are also interested but will not pay the fee that Lille are demanding. It is reported that the French side want to bank €60million (£50.6million) for the 18-year-old.

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the youngster. Yoro’s deal with Lille expires next summer so the club could be forced into lowering their demands.

City fight to keep Pep

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour is leading a fierce charm offensive to keep Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

The Abu Dhabi prince welcomed Guardiola into his home during the week for a meeting that was planned before his manager announced that he could leave the club when his contract expires next year. But City will not let the six-time Premier League winner walk away without a fight to convince him that he still has more to achieve in Manchester.‌

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarek has promised to do all that he can to persuade Guardiola to sign an extension that would take his reign to beyond a decade.

City are hoping that the prospect of taking his team to the expanded Club World Cup in the United States next summer will be too tantalising to resist.

Barcelona eye Mainoo

Man United academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo was one of the Red Devils’ breakout stars at Old Trafford last season. But he might not be at the club for very long.

According to reports in Belgium, Spanish giants Barcelona are interested in moving for the young midfielder. The Red Devils, however, are also trying to do all they can to keep him.

It is suggested that Man United officials are aware of Barca’s interest and have opened talks regarding a new deal. Mainoo’s representatives are asking for an extension to his current deal with a significant wage increase. The 19-year-old has three years left on his deal at Old Trafford.

De Bruyne could lead City exodus

After a record fourth straight Premier League title, it would seem Manchester City's squad needs little in the way of upgrading this summer.

But with several high-profile names potentially ready to move on this summer, City and boss Pep Guardiola - in what is likely to be his last season in charge - will oversee further evolution of arguably the world's best squad.

Playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, one of the greatest players in City's history, has admitted he would be tempted by the huge sums of money on offer to players who go to the Saudi Pro League.

De Bruyne, who turns 33 in a couple of weeks, missed the first five months of last season with a serious hamstring injury and may decide the time has come to leave after nine illustrious years at the Etihad, during which time he has become a club and Premier League legend.

“I feel uncomfortable about these stories because they are lies. There’s absolutely nothing there”, he told De Telegraaf. “If I leave PSV, it will be to join a club that likes to have the ball. I’m not a player who stays back and chases the ball throughout the game.”
