Squinting At LifeOn the way back from Chandigarh yesterday on the Shatabdi Express, on an impulse, I walked over to the door of the compartment, opened it and stood there watching the scenery fly by. A habit from my younger days, many a journey have I stood like this singing to myself, delivering speeches, making faces and sometimes crying my heart out as memories of old hurts swam to the surface.There is something about watching the farms, jungles, and towns fly by, standing at an open train door, that is different from watching all this through a compartment window. A window is after just another screen adding a visual to the multiple visuals that screens throw at you all the time- at the door, you are part of the scenery. The wind blows in your face, and the trees and farms pass by in riotous colour. Eyes wide open, you scan the distant horizons and the distance between the ‘out there’, and you disappears entirely. For that brief period, you are thoroughly alive! Unlike this, when watching through the compartment window, you squint. Eyes narrowed down, and brow furrowed, you only see what the window will let you see.Aren’t we doing the same in real life, too?
