Ladies and Gentlemen, friends, and acquaintances. It’s Saturday, and that means… time for a new Let’s Talk Anime post. For today’s blog, it is about something fun and fairly recent. Let’s talk aboutTokyo Revengers!
As we all know, Tokyo Revengers is an anime series based off its manga. Although just gained its newly-found popularity, this new anime series is known all over the internet through social media posts, video clips, memes, edits, and tiktoks. With its manga published in March 2017 and the series aired on April 2021. Initially, the manga was written and illustrated by Ken Wakui and was published on Weekly Shonen Magazine. Later on, the series was aired in Japanese TV networks MBS, TV Tokyo and English network Animax Asia. The series were also licensed by Crunchyroll for online streaming outside Asia as well as Muse Communications for Asian online streaming and the mentioned Animax Asia for TV.
You might heard and might be familiar about Tokyo Manji Gang as well as its leader Manjiro Sano, also known as Mikey, as well as Characters Ken Ryuguji and Keisuke Baji. And if you are looking for what anime that is, you are at the right place.
As for the plot, Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old man has heard from the news that his ex-girlfriend Hinata Tachibana and her younger brother Naoto has been killed by the notorious group Tokyo Manji Gang. Then, an incident got Takemichi back to his middle school years in 2005. As when he got the chance to shake hands with the then Naoto, he created a time paradox that retrieved the young lad, which turned out as a detective at present time. With that, every time Takemichi and Naoto hold hands, he goes 12 years back in time. Using his knowledge from the future, Takemichi vows to save Hinata.
Takemichi worked his way up and infiltrated the gang. Although not a strong link to be in the group, he was able to impress the gang with his ability to resolve or avoid issues and protect everyone due to his knowledge about the future, getting him to higher ranks and even became Mikey’s right hand. In Layman’s terms, his abilities to make decisions in regard to future events really got the gang’s trust in him.
As we all know in the concept of time travelling, changing things could make a huge impact to the future, and that is the nature of the series. Takemichi travels back in time, did his best to change things in order for the gang not to kill his ex-girlfriend in the future.
Of course, as a series about gangs and gangsters, there are a lot of violence in this anime. Mostly about gang wars, inner conflicts, betrayals, change of loyalties, gang mergings/absorptions, and more. You get the idea, trouble, violence, and crime is in every gang’s DNA, just leads on a competition on who’s the powerful. Later on in the present, Tokyo Manji, the gang who killed Hinata, grew into huge-scale crime organization.
According to the Manga, In the end, Takemichi was able to save his friends with his time travelling and changing the events, even preventing Mikey to jump off a building. He prevented the Tokyo Manji to grow more the gang disbanded over time. Although some gangs still thrive, and Mikey is starting up with a new gang as well, hence Takemichi challenging him by recreating Tokyo Manji Gang.
Aside from the anime itself, the show is known for iconic fictional items that we bring back to life such as the cosplay costumes and wigs of these characters. Aside from that, the love over Tokyo Revengers is never ending as different merch items inspired by the show is kept being made such as action figures, and even display posters, LED Lights, and more. Merch items are such a must-have for every huge fan but still worth checking out if you have the likings for the show’s aesthetic and even casually interested with the show.
Due to the popularity of the manga and the show, A live action film, and a stage play was created in Japan, dated and scheduled July and August 2021 respectfully. Aside from that, second stage play, titled Tokyo Revengers: Bloody Halloween, scheduled to run from March 18 to March 21, 2022 in Osaka and March 25 to April 5, 2022 in Tokyo.
In 2021, Western localized versions of the anime censored the Buddhist manji swastika (卍) symbol used by the Tokyo Manji Gang, in order to avoid potential controversy that may arise from confusion with the similar-looking Nazi swastika (卐) symbol. The Manga, Tokyo Revengers won the 44th annual Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2021.
According to Wikipedia: In 2021, Tokyo Revengers won in the anime category of the Yahoo! Japan Search Awards, based on the number of searches for a particular term compared to the year before. The series won the “Anime Award” for its popularity on the 2021 Twitter Japan’s Trend Awards. The anime adaptation of Tokyo revengers became the 7th most discussed TV show of 2021 worldwide on Twitter. The series topped the list of “Trend Rankings Selected by Teens in 2021” by Mynavi Corporation’s Mynavi Teens Lab, which conducts teen marketing and research.
