Death and Resurrection (Come Follow Me Lesson for Kids: June 17-23) (2024)

Jesus Christ overcame physical death, and because of Him, we will also be resurrected. What a comforting doctrine! We have all experienced loss at some point, and if they haven't yet, eventually our children will too.

The resurrection gives us hope and can be a healing balm when we have to say goodbye to someone that we love. There is peace in knowing that our loved ones live on and that all will be restored and made right in the resurrection.

In this sweet and reverent lesson, children will learn about the physical body and the spiritual body, physical death, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the resurrection of the dead.

Have a glove ready for each person to use as part of the introduction activity.

➤ I N T R O D U C T I O N

Pass out a glove to each person and instruct them to place the glove in front of them on the floor.

Say: “These gloves represent our bodies. They don’t work by themselves. There must be a spirit inside the body in order for the body to be alive.”

Instruct children to hold up their hands and wiggle their fingers.

Say: “Before we are born, our spirits are alive, but our spirits don’t have a body, just like your hand doesn’t have a glove right now. Do you know what happens when our spirit goes inside our body?”

Instruct children to put on their gloves and move their hands around.

Say: “Our body is alive now! We can move and play and work and do lots of things with our body! But, our bodies get old and they die. Do you know what happens when our body dies?”

Instruct children to take off their gloves and put them back on the floor.

Say: “When our body dies, our spirit is still alive. But, but now our spirit doesn’t have a body any more. Do you know what resurrection means?”

Instruct children to put on their gloves again.

“Because of Jesus Christ’s atonement, we will all be resurrected! Resurrection is when our spirit and our body go back together again! And when we are resurrected, our bodies will be new again and our bodies won’t get old or die any more!”

Scripture Activity:

Invite children to listen carefully to the scriptures. Instruct them to remove their glove every time they hear the word “death” and to put the glove back on every time they hear the word “resurrection.”

6 Now there must needs be a space betwixt the time of death and the time of the resurrection.

7 And now I would inquire what becometh of the souls of men from this time of death to the time appointed for the resurrection?

11 Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life.

20 But behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth, and hath power over the dead; therefore, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead.

7 And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.

8 But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.
